Design encompasses so much more than how a particular object looks. It actually involves the intent that goes into creating things such as new residential communities in both rural and urban areas, transportation systems that people rely on to get to and from work and of course buildings. Design is intentionally approaching anything that is being made for human beings to use with intention and purpose. It should go without saying that design involves a lot more than simply making things that other people will find to be aesthetically pleasing. Design is often about utility. It is about making things that are effective and as a result bring efficiency and value to the lives of the people who are using them. Design that is truly beautiful creates solutions that are remarkable with regard to the ease that they create for the people who are able to take advantage of them.
While designers are often pledged with the task of creating beautiful things they are increasingly being looked to to apply the tools of their trade to other challenges. The movement to integrate the ethos and techniques that are used by designers into other industries is arguably rooted in the work that has been done by the well known design firm IDEO. The company began by offering its professional services to meet the needs of clients who traditionally sought out the skillset of designers however the people behind the company soon realized that the framework that they had developed to help their clients could easily be used by other professionals and applied to bring about solutions to problems that were not the wheelhouse of designers.

The framework that IDEO developed long ago is known as design thinking. What sets design thinking apart as a methodology is the fact that it is centered around empathy for the people who will be using a product, engaging in an experience or using a building that a team or individual professional is working on. CEO Robert Ivy has written about the importance of design thinking to the future of the profession of architecture and how it can be aligned with the medical profession in order to improve the health of patients and communities. Architects might often find themselves developing blueprints and executing a client’s vision without thinking about what the people who will be living, working, learning or even healing in the buildings they are creating will need. Design thinking encourages such architects to be mindful of the needs of the people who will be using a given building and even encourages them to incorporate those needs into the design process. Robert Ivy, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the architectural professional organization the AIA noted in an article that design thinking could be used by architects to advance health in a given community.
